Consumers Acting for People and the Environment

Consumers Acting for People and the Environment (Consumerpower) has always been regarded as a green group by many people. However, to be accurate, we are a grass root group that focuses on reflecting how modern consumption patterns bring detrimental effects to the environment and to the lives of both modern people and tribal peoples. Though there is an increasing concern for environmental protection in Hong Kong now, consumerism, the fundamental cause of environmental problems, is greatly encouraged by almost every sector in the society. There is a lack of discussions on the truths behind it. Our mission is to reveal the truths to the public and to urge them to take up their responsibilities by changing their behaviors.

With a crave for profits and instant gratification of desires, modern people launch large scale assaults upon the environment in order to obtain the ‘resources’ for manufacturing, packaging and transporting goods for consumption and disposal. Not only these assaults bring disasters to the environment, they also ruin our relationships with the nature and with one another. And for tribal peoples who have been living in the nature for generations, the destruction of the nature threatens their survival and their cultures that are part of the nature.

Through media and educational activities, Consumerpower tries to arouse the public’s awareness to the above issues and advocates for an end to consumptions that are not necessities. To induce changes in people’s behaviors, we launch campaigns with goals that are clear, practical and closely related to everyday life. “Save the Forest Campaign” encourages every sector in the society to reduce their consumption of paper. And if the use of paper is absolutely necessary, we ask people to use processed chlorine free (PCF) 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper.

Though we choose goals that are practical to encourage more people to join us, we do not make any compromise in our position. We ask people to use paper only under absolute necessary conditions. We urge the government to introduce laws to regulate junk mails. We also promote e-bills and other electronic means of communication to replace the use of paper. Regarding recycled paper, we stand firmly to using 100 % recycled paper to ensure that not one single tree would be cut down during the paper making process.

We also insist on the avoidance of chlorine in bleaching because chlorine will produce toxins such as dioxin that pollutes the environment in irrecoverable ways. To encourage more people to use this kind of paper, we have started a series of promotional activities and provided the public with information of the above paper for printing, photocopying and toilet use. Of course we need to bear in mind that any kind of consumer goods will bring certain harms to the environment, but as the giant modern consumption system is not going to be changed overnight, consumer goods that are relatively less harmful are alternatives for people who try to adopt a more responsible attitude to consumption. It is our hope that their changes will influence other people and even institutions.

To initiate changes by institutions, we work in partnerships with schools, teachers’ bodies, student societies and organizations in business and social services sectors. With our support, they have started programs to promote the reduction of paper consumption and have also begun to use PCF 100% recycled paper. Changes in behaviors by institutions are forms of education for the public. We believe that that will help to make the movement by consumers bigger and stronger eventually.
